These locks are not dyed—their gorgeous shades come straight from the sheep. Natural black BFL can range from deep charcoal and black to smoky gray, silver, brown-black, and other beautiful variations. That natural variation gives every fleece its own personality and makes these locks especially fun for fiber art.
Bluefaced Leicester wool is loved for its beautiful luster, distinctive curls, and versatility. Use these natural locks for needle felting, spinning, art batts, doll hair, beards, weaving, wet felting, embellishment, and other fiber arts.
Meet the Sheep Behind the Wool
Each selection is listed by the name of the sheep who grew the fleece because every sheep produces wool with its own unique characteristics.
Most locks have an average staple length of approximately 6 inches unless otherwise noted.
Depending on the sheep and the individual fleece, you may find tight defined curls, longer flowing locks, looser waves, or locks with a beautiful natural halo.
Every Fleece Is Different
Although every fleece is washed and prepared using the same process, no two fleeces are exactly alike.
Natural Black Bluefaced Leicester locks will vary in:
Natural color and shading
Curl and crimp
Lock definition
Staple length
Texture
Luster
Character
Amount of natural halo or "fuzz"
There may even be variations within the same fleece. You may see different shades, curl patterns, textures, or amounts of halo depending on where the locks grew on the sheep.
These variations are not flaws—they're part of the character of real, naturally colored farm-grown wool.

Because this is naturally colored wool, please also expect some variation in color throughout your ounce. Natural black does not necessarily mean solid jet black.
If your project requires a particular type of lock—such as long locks for beards, highly defined curls, minimal halo, doll hair, a particular shade, or a specific texture—please leave me a note in the comment section of your order telling me what you're making. I'll use that information when preparing your order whenever possible.
Because wool is a natural product, I cannot guarantee that every lock within an ounce will be identical.
